Chapter 32:
Intestinal Gas
KEY POINTS
1) Everyone has and passes gas. Gas is ubiquitous and that includes our digestive system. Everyone has it!
2) Symptoms may occur due to gas trapped at sharp angles in the bowel or due to increased sensitivity of the gut, as seen in irritable bowel syndrome.
NORMAL AMOUNT OF GAS AND GAS EXPULSIONS (FLATUS)
An average adult produces one to three pints of intestinal gas every day, and the number of flatus expulsions may vary from 14 to 23 per day. The food you eat and the intestinal bacteria play a pivotal role in the amount and aroma of your flatulence.
DO OLDER FOLKS PRODUCE MORE GAS?
Many elderly people complain of increased frequency of flatus. However, they usually pass smaller amounts of gas with greater frequency, since their ability to hold gas may be impaired.
